Lab Tools

We use SnapGene for all our molecular biology, which also offers a free SnapGene Viewer program to read .dna files.

To model biomolecular structures, we use PyMol. (We are learning Chimera, but it is not KAL’s native environment.)

To calculate and visualize internal volumes, we like MoloVol.

We manage our ordering, inventory, and storage with Quartzy.

Our preferred reference manager is Mendeley. (We are learning EndNote, but it is not KAL’s native environment either.)

One of our Green Lab initiatives is to keep our ultralow freezer at -70ºC to save energy and prolong the freezer’s life (recently highlighted in the C&E News). You can too!

BiochemTV is our favorite how-to channel for many aspects of biochemistry labwork.

Undergrad in the Lab provides advice and guidance for successful undergraduate research experiences from both the student and faculty perspectives.

Emily Summerbell, for  the  American Society for Cell Biology, offers practical advice for “controlling the chaos” of research labs.
